Me against the world album genius2/20/2023 It’s not that the links New Order forged between post-punk and disco were so unique plenty of their contemporaries were doing the same. The story’s more complicated than that, of course, and what makes this album so thrilling is the way it balances the bleak and the giddy, reshaping the group’s stark past into effervescent synth-pop. But whereas their 1981 debut, Movement, was still in many ways a Joy Division album-it would not be hard to imagine Curtis singing over most of those songs- Power, Corruption & Lies made a clean break with the past, beginning with the incongruously major-key melody of opener “Age of Consent.” Could it be that England’s paragons of moroseness had actually found happiness? Listen: Boogie Down Productions: “Poetry”įrom the moment Ian Curtis’ suicide put an end to Joy Division, New Order ’s career has been a story of perpetual reinvention it’s right there in the name. “I’ve listened to these MCs back when I was a kid/But I bust more shots than they ever did,” KRS boasts, drawing a line in the sand that made BDP leaders in the dawning golden age of hip-hop. Criminal Minded ’s two bookending cuts-opener “Poetry” and the closing title track-show what separated the chant-along simplicity of old-school rap from a new wave of intricate, sharp-witted lyricism and constantly shifting rhyme schemes. “South Bronx” and “The Bridge Is Over” are the two heavy-knocking shots that dented the previously unpierceable armor of their Queensbridge rivals in the Juice Crew. “9mm Goes Bang” and “Remix for P Is Free” pioneered first-person crime storytelling in rap and forged early connections to dancehall. Joining them was Ced-Gee, the mad-scientist rapper and sampling whiz of Ultramagnetic MC’s, who contributed more than half the album’s beats. The group’s producer and DJ, Scott LaRock, immortalized their legacy on wax. Hungry young rapper KRS-One exploded onto the scene with a booming voice, a chip on his shoulder, and a fearlessness that sparked a formative feud in hip-hop: his Bronx versus Marley Marl’s Queens, a rivalry that became known as the Bridge Wars. Criminal Minded advanced hip-hop as a storytelling medium and an increasingly complex musical language.
